How to Install & Play Nintendo Switch Games

Nintendo Switch games come in NSP (Digital package), XCI (Game cartridge dump), or NSZ (Compressed NSP) formats. You can play them on PC / Steam Deck using emulators or install them directly onto a hacked Switch console running Atmosphere custom firmware.

1. Playing on PC / Steam Deck (Emulation)

What You Need

  • Switch Emulator (e.g. Ryujinx / Eden / Suyu / Yuzu)
  • prod.keys & title.keys (Encryption keys matching the required firmware version)
  • Switch System Firmware (e.g. Firmware 18.0.0+ for newer games)
  • Game File (.nsp, .xci, or .nsz)

Step 1: Install Keys

  1. Launch your emulator.
  2. Open the keys directory (File → Open Keys Folder or ~/.config/ryujinx/system/).
  3. Copy prod.keys and title.keys into the folder.
  4. Restart the emulator.

Step 2: Install Firmware

  1. In the emulator menu: Tools → Install Firmware → Install firmware from XCI or ZIP.
  2. Select your downloaded firmware .zip file.
  3. Confirm installation.

Step 3: Add Game Directory & Install Game Updates / DLC

  1. Add your games folder in emulator settings.
  2. To install Game Updates or DLC:
    • Right-click the game in your library → Manage Title Updates / Manage DLC.
    • Click Add and select the .nsp / .nsz update file.
    • Click Save.

2. Installing Games on a Hacked Switch Console (Atmosphere CFW)

If you have a modded Nintendo Switch running Atmosphere CFW:

  • DBI (Database Installer): Fastest and most reliable installer.
  • AIO Switch Updater / Tinfoil: Alternative network & USB installers.

Step-by-Step with DBI (MTP Mode via USB)

  1. Connect your Switch to your PC via a USB-C cable.
  2. Launch DBI on your Switch from the Homebrew menu.
  3. Select Run MTP responder.
  4. On your PC, open File Explorer and navigate to the newly mounted Switch device.
  5. Open the NAND Install or SD Card Install folder.
  6. Drag and drop your .nsp, .xci, or .nsz files into the folder window.
  7. DBI will stream and install the game directly onto your Switch storage in real-time.
  8. Once complete, press X on your Switch to exit MTP mode and launch the game from the Switch home menu!
