Spelunker Black on PS3 is a Japan-exclusive PlayStation Network downloadable platformer released on March 26, 2009 by Irem Software Engineering and Tozai Games. This re-release of Spelunker HD features a new protagonist, the Black Spelunker, and introduces a much narrower field of vision with a large portion of the screen obscured by darkness, making it significantly more challenging than the original. Players can release a flare to temporarily broaden their vision while navigating treacherous caves filled with classic Spelunker hazards like pits, bombs, insects, and crumbling platforms. The game retains the same core gameplay as Spelunker HD where you guide a nervous spelunker through dangerous underground levels, collecting gold while avoiding deadly traps, but the added darkness mechanic and increased difficulty contributed to its lower popularity compared to the original. Spelunker Black was delisted from the PSN store on December 20, 2011 when Tozai Games acquired publishing rights from Irem, making it lost media that is no longer officially available for purchase.
